A delighted patient with Dr Pieter Claassen at Calm & Gentle Dental Care Tonbridge

“The fear is real, and it’s never silly. My job is to earn your trust one small step at a time — and to make sure nothing happens until you’re ready for it.”

— Dr Pieter Claassen, principal dentist

You’re not alone

Does any of this sound like you?

If you recognise even one of these, you’re in exactly the right place — and you’re in good company.

  • You’ve put off going for years — maybe longer than you’d admit.
  • A bad experience in the past has stuck with you.
  • You feel panicky or trapped once you’re in the chair.
  • You have a strong gag reflex and dread things going near it.
  • You’re certain it’s going to hurt.
  • You’re embarrassed about the state of your teeth.

How we’re different

Care built around the fear, not despite it

⏱

Unhurried & gentle

Longer appointments so nothing is rushed. We stop the moment you need a break.

💬

We explain first

No surprises. You’ll always know what’s about to happen and why, in plain language.

✋

You’re in control

We agree a stop signal before we start — raise your hand and everything pauses, every time.

◦

Truly painless numbing

Gentle numbing technique so the anaesthetic itself doesn’t hurt going in.

☾

A calming pre-med

A light sedative you can take beforehand to soften the nerves — you stay awake, aware and in control.

♡

A calm practice

Unclinical, friendly and quiet. Being gentle isn’t a slogan for us — it’s the whole point.

Relaxation options

A calming pre-med, if you’d like one

For many people, an unhurried pace and plenty of reassurance are enough. If the nerves still feel like too much, a light sedative beforehand can take the edge off — and that’s completely fine.

  • A light sedative (premedication) taken before your appointment to help you feel calm and relaxed
  • You stay awake, aware and in control the whole time — it simply softens the anxiety
  • Well suited to nervous patients and to longer or more involved treatment
  • We’ll talk it through first and only arrange it if you want it

Need bigger work? You’ll never be left without teeth.

Even for implants and full-mouth treatment, Dr Claassen fits secure temporary teeth the same day — you always leave able to smile. It’s the question nervous patients ask most, and the answer is always yes.

★★★★★

“You guided me through every step and answered every question — on that fine line between dumbing down and talking down. I’ve attended dentists in France, the US, Australia and the UK; a visit to Calm & Gentle is the first I’ve not dreaded.”

— Patrick Stoner, patient

What to expect

Your first visit — no treatment unless you want it

1

Just a chat

We start by listening — your worries, your history, what you’d like to change. Nothing more unless you’re ready.

2

A gentle look

A careful, unhurried examination. We explain what we see, honestly and without judgement.

3

A plan, together

We agree what to do and how fast to go — in steps that feel manageable to you, with clear costs.

4

You decide

You’re always in charge of what happens next, and when. No pressure, ever.

Your first visit

What your first visit looks like

There is no big procedure on day one — just a chance to meet, talk, and go at whatever pace feels right. You can bring someone with you, ask as many questions as you like, and agree a stop signal so you are always in control. We will look only as far as you are comfortable, explain everything before we do it, and never pressure you into treatment.

If nerves still run high, we can offer premedication — a light sedative taken beforehand to help you feel calm and relaxed while staying awake and aware. Many of our patients had avoided the dentist for years; they stay because here, being nervous is completely normal and never judged.

Your questions

Nervous-patient questions, answered

Can I just come in for a chat first?

Yes — and we’d encourage it. Plenty of patients book a first visit just to talk and look around, with no examination or treatment until they feel ready. There’s no obligation to go further.

Will it hurt?

We go to real lengths to make sure it doesn’t. Gentle numbing means the anaesthetic itself is comfortable going in, and with a stop signal agreed beforehand, you stay in control the whole time.

It’s been years since I last went — is that too long?

Never. We see people who haven’t been in five, ten, even twenty years. There’s no lecture and no judgement — just a fresh start from wherever you are today. Whether you’re looking for a new private dentist or need emergency care, we’ll meet you where you are.

Do you offer sedation?

We offer premedication — a light sedative taken shortly before your visit to help you feel calm and relaxed (rather than IV sedation). You stay awake and in control throughout, and we’ll always talk it through with you first.

Can I bring someone with me?

Of course. Many patients feel steadier with a familiar face nearby, and you’re welcome to bring someone to your appointment.
