Worried a mole or lump might be something more? Mr Gouws holds a Diploma in Dermatology alongside his surgical training and can biopsy suspicious lesions himself. Mr Pieter Gouws
A Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists with a Diploma in Dermatology, Mr Gouws is a consultant eye surgeon who has personally performed over 20,000 eye operations. He trained through fellowships in glaucoma (Toronto) and medical retina (Bristol), was clinical lead for ophthalmology at Conquest Hospital in Hastings, established East Sussex's diabetic eye-screening programme, and has published more than 25 papers in peer-reviewed journals. It's this surgical precision, combined with a dermatology qualification, that he brings to skin and eyelid work at Calm & Gentle Skin — where you're assessed and treated by the same consultant from start to finish. Away from the clinic, he is a founding director of the Andean Medical Mission, a charity restoring sight in remote regions of the Bolivian Amazon.
Mole removal, step by step
You see the consultant who treats you — there's no hand-off from a nurse or salon to a doctor you've not met. Most minor removals are done under local anaesthetic and take only a short time, and you can get straight back to your day. Where a mole or lesion is suitable for it, laser removal is used to keep the wound small and downtime to a minimum.
Consultation & assessment
Mr Gouws examines the lesion, tells you honestly what it is, and talks through your options — with no pressure to proceed.
Removal under local anaesthetic
Where you choose to go ahead, most lesions are removed the same day, quickly and comfortably.
Laboratory analysis
Anything removed is sent to an accredited laboratory, so nothing is assumed to be harmless.
Results & aftercare
You get clear aftercare and your results, with a letter to your GP where you consent. Anything concerning is directed into the right NHS pathway promptly.

Mole removal — your questions answered
Is mole removal safe?
Yes. Every lesion is assessed by a dermatology-qualified consultant and, once removed, analysed by an accredited laboratory. If anything looks like it needs urgent specialist care, we arrange the right referral promptly.
Is mole removal painful?
No — removal is carried out under local anaesthetic, so it's virtually painless, here in our clinic on Tonbridge High Street. Most people are surprised how quick and comfortable it is, and you can get straight back to your day.
How much does private mole removal cost in Kent?
Mole and skin-lesion removal starts from £150 per lesion, including laboratory analysis. The consultation is £75, deducted from your treatment if you go ahead. The exact fee depends on the lesion and technique and is confirmed at your consultation, so you always know the cost before going ahead — with no obligation to proceed.
How soon can I be seen?
We offer prompt private appointments — no lengthy dermatology waiting list. Call 01732 353402 and we'll find you a convenient time, often within days.
Can you remove more than one lesion at a time?
Often, yes — several small lesions can frequently be dealt with in one visit. Mr Gouws will confirm what's sensible and the fee for each at your consultation.
What happens to the mole after it's removed?
It's sent to an accredited laboratory for analysis (histology). We contact you with the result and, with your consent, send a letter to your GP. Anything concerning is directed into the appropriate NHS pathway.
Is mole removal available on the NHS or covered by insurance?
Removing a mole for cosmetic reasons isn't usually funded by the NHS, which is why many people choose a prompt private option. If removal is medically necessary, some insurers may contribute — it's worth checking your policy.
Will it leave a scar?
Any procedure that removes skin can leave a small mark, but as an experienced surgeon Mr Gouws uses techniques designed to keep this to a minimum. We'll discuss what to expect for your specific lesion beforehand.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No — you can book directly with us. If your GP has suggested a private option because of NHS waiting times, we're happy to liaise with them.
Which areas do you cover?
Our clinic is on Tonbridge High Street and we welcome patients from across west Kent — Hildenborough, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Southborough and the surrounding villages — for mole checks, mole removal and skin-tag removal.
Who carries out the treatment?
Your treatment is performed by Mr Gouws himself, a consultant eye surgeon and dermatology-qualified doctor.
