A very happy overdenture patient

See for yourself — a patient shows just how firmly the denture clips onto the implants.

What is an implant-supported denture?

An implant-supported denture — sometimes called an overdenture or a "snap-in" denture — is a denture that anchors onto a few dental implants instead of resting on your gums. Those implants act like the roots of teeth, holding the denture firm so it can't rock or slip. Most lower dentures need as few as two implants; upper dentures usually need a few more.

It's the ideal step up for denture wearers who love the idea of stability but don't want (or don't need) a full set of fixed teeth. You get the confidence of implants at a gentler price than a fully fixed bridge — and you can still take it out to clean.

Not sure this is the right option? If you're only missing one tooth, a single tooth dental implant may be all you need — and if you'd prefer a full set of fixed teeth that never come out, take a look at our All-on-4 full-mouth implants.

Two ways to secure your denture

At your consultation we'll show you which suits your mouth, your bite and your budget. There are two proven ways to hold the denture onto your implants:

Locator ("press-stud") attachments

A small stud sits on each implant, and matching sockets in your denture snap onto them — a bit like press-studs on a jacket.

Best for

A simpler, more affordable route with excellent hold. Easy to clean around each stud, and forgiving if implants sit at slightly different angles.

Good to know

The small nylon inserts that grip the studs wear over time and are replaced in a quick, routine visit to keep the hold snug.

Most stable

Bar-retained denture

A slim custom bar is fixed across your implants, joining them together, and your denture clips precisely onto the bar.

Best for

The most stable, most secure result. Joining the implants spreads the load and gives extra side-to-side steadiness — lovely for a varied diet or a flatter ridge.

Good to know

It costs a little more to make, and it's worth spending an extra moment cleaning under the bar — we'll show you exactly how.

Both keep your denture far steadier than gum-suction alone. In short: Locators are the simpler, gentler-on-budget option; a bar gives the greatest stability. We'll recommend honestly, based on what your mouth needs — not the more expensive option by default.

Dr Claassen shows on a model how a bar-retained denture clips securely over the bar framework.

Why patients love implant-supported dentures

  • No more slipping, clicking or rubbing sore spots
  • Eat the foods a loose denture makes impossible
  • Speak and laugh with complete confidence
  • Often little or no palate needed, so you taste food properly
  • Helps hold the jawbone that bare dentures leave to shrink
  • Lifts out for easy cleaning — cared for and guaranteed in Tonbridge

Told you don't have enough bone? It may still be possible

Many people are turned away for implants because they're told there isn't enough bone. Often, an implant-supported denture needs fewer implants than fixed teeth, and careful planning from a 3D scan can find a way forward where others couldn't. If you've been told "no" before, it's well worth a second look — as one of our patients found below.

Why have it done in Tonbridge, not abroad

Implant dentures abroad can look cheaper up front — but inserts wear and clips need adjusting, and when they do, the flights and the worry are yours to manage. With us, your fitting, your maintenance and your minimum 5-year guarantee are all minutes from home, with a dentist you can actually sit down with.

More from our implant patients

“Having implants was the best decision I ever made. I used to hide my teeth and wouldn't eat in public. Now I can eat what I want, when I want — including apples — and I'm far more confident.”

“Look, no one likes going to the dentist! With most it is an unpleasant and even painful experience. Not so with Pieter. 'Calm and Gentle' is the promise and that is what I experienced. Implant-supported denture FAQs

Will my denture still slip?

No — that's the whole point. It clips firmly onto your implants and stays put while you eat and talk. You choose when to take it out to clean.

Locator or bar — which is better for me?

Locators are simpler, easier to clean and gentler on budget; a bar joins the implants for the greatest stability. Neither is "better" in every case — we'll recommend honestly based on your mouth and your bite at your free consultation.

How many implants will I need?

Often as few as two for a lower denture; an upper denture usually needs a few more. Your 3D scan tells us exactly.

I was told I don't have enough bone — can I still have this?

Often, yes. An implant-supported denture usually needs fewer implants than fixed teeth, and careful planning from a 3D scan can find options others miss. It's well worth a second opinion.

Do I still take it out to clean?

Yes — it lifts out in seconds, which makes cleaning your denture and your implants easy and keeps everything healthy.

Will the attachments wear out?

The small nylon inserts (Locator) or clips (bar) that grip your implants gently wear with use — that's normal. We simply swap them in a quick routine visit so the hold stays snug for years.

Can I spread the cost?

Yes — 0% finance is available so you can pay in manageable monthly instalments.

What are implant-supported dentures?

They're dentures that clip onto a small number of dental implants instead of resting on your gums. The implants hold the denture firmly so it doesn't slip or need adhesive, yet you can still take it out to clean — the security of fixed teeth with the easy maintenance of a removable denture.

How much do implant-supported dentures cost?

At Calm & Gentle an implant-supported overdenture starts from £5,250 with Locator (press-stud) attachments, or from £7,250 for a bar-retained denture, with finance available to spread the cost. You'll get a clear, all-inclusive quote at your free consultation and 3D scan — and all your aftercare stays here in Tonbridge.

What are the downsides of implant-supported dentures?

In fairness, it involves minor implant surgery and a healing period, there's a cost up front, and the click-in nylon inserts wear over time and need replacing periodically — a quick, inexpensive chairside swap. You'll also still take the denture out to clean it. For most people who've battled loose lower dentures, the gain in comfort and confidence is transformative.

How long do implant-supported dentures take?

From placing the implants to your final denture is usually around 3–4 months, allowing them to fuse securely with the bone. In many cases you can wear your existing or a temporary denture in the meantime, so you're never left without teeth. We'll give you a precise timeline at your consultation.
